Legendary Television has acquired the rights to adapt Neal Stephenson’s acclaimed sci-fi novel Seveneves for television, with former Color Force executive Allison Friedman set to executive produce.
Published in 2015 by William Morrow, Seveneves begins with a world-shattering event: a meteor impact breaks the moon into seven fragments. Scientists warn that within two years, the resulting “hard rain” of debris will render Earth uninhabitable. Nations across the globe unite in a desperate mission to preserve humanity’s future, launching a sweeping survival effort that redefines the course of civilisation.
The novel was praised for its blend of hard science and human drama, earning the Prometheus Award for Best Novel. It was also included on President Barack Obama’s summer reading list, cementing its status as one of the most talked-about speculative works of the decade.
Stephenson is widely regarded as one of the foremost voices in science fiction and futurism. His body of work includes Anathem, Reamde, and Cryptonomicon. Beyond the page, he has made his mark in technology and innovation — serving as the first employee at Jeff Bezos’ aerospace company Blue Origin and spending seven years as Chief Futurist at Magic Leap. He is also credited with coining the term “metaverse,” popularising “avatar” in a digital context, and anticipating concepts foundational to cryptocurrency. He is represented by The Gotham Group and Stankevich Law on behalf of Darhansoff & Verrill Literary Agents.
Friedman brings a strong track record in shepherding large-scale projects. While at Genre Films, she championed the Ridley Scott–produced adaptation of The Martian. At Color Force, she worked on projects ranging from Crazy Rich Asians to FX’s award-winning anthology American Crime Story. Her mix of experience across studio films and prestige television makes her a key creative lead for this ambitious adaptation.
For Legendary Television, Seveneves represents another bold entry into high-concept genre storytelling. The studio’s current slate includes Dune: The Sisterhood and the recently announced series Executioner starring Boyd Holbrook. Adding Stephenson’s survival epic signals Legendary’s continued investment in complex, world-building narratives that aim to resonate with global audiences.
With Friedman at the helm and Stephenson’s novel as its blueprint, the Seveneves series promises to be one of the most ambitious science fiction adaptations in development — a story of survival, ingenuity, and humanity’s will to endure.
