Legendary Entertainment has unveiled the first official look at its upcoming reboot of The Toxic Avenger, and it’s as outrageous as fans might expect. The images showcase Peter Dinklage, the unlikely star of the cult-inspired remake, donning a tutu while Elijah Wood appears almost unrecognisable, styled in grotesque, Penguin-inspired makeup for his villainous role.

The original Toxic Avenger, released in 1984 by Troma Entertainment, became a cult favourite thanks to its campy mix of horror, comedy, and over-the-top violence. This new version aims to preserve that eccentric spirit while giving the film a modern edge. Legendary’s reboot is directed by Macon Blair, known for I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore, and has been described as both faithful to its roots and refreshingly inventive.

Peter Dinklage, best known for his Emmy-winning turn as Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones, steps into the unlikely role of Toxie, a down-and-out man transformed into a hideously deformed superhero after a toxic accident. The tutu moment is a nod to the film’s embrace of absurd, campy humour, reminding audiences that this is not a typical superhero tale.

Joining him is Elijah Wood, who takes on the role of the villain Fritz Garbinger, an eccentric antagonist with a grotesque, birdlike appearance. The character design has already drawn comparisons to Danny DeVito’s Penguin from Batman Returns, further adding to the film’s retro horror-comedy vibe.

The ensemble cast also features Kevin Bacon, Jacob Tremblay, and Taylour Paige, rounding out a line-up that blends both acclaimed performers and fresh talent. With Blair at the helm, the project is expected to balance outrageous visuals with a story rooted in dark satire and underdog empowerment.

The reboot signals Legendary’s continued interest in reviving cult classics for new audiences, with The Toxic Avenger standing as one of the most ambitious projects yet. While a release date has not been confirmed, anticipation is already high, particularly among fans of the original Troma films.

If the first look is any indication, this reboot won’t shy away from the weird, wild, and wonderfully grotesque elements that made the original a midnight-movie phenomenon.
